However, the discovery that the universe is indeed an ordered place governed by consistent laws eventually led many people (in the academic world particularly) to embrace a new "worldview" which suggested that absolutely everything in the universe can be explained according to natural scientific laws. For many people, belief in anything of a supernatural nature seemed now seemed naive.
It's important to note that, while many scientists are Naturalists, Naturalism and science are not the same thing (see Alvin Platinga, Where the Conflict Really Lies: Science, Religion and Naturalism). Science is a methodolgy for exploring the natural laws which govern the universe whearas Naturalism is a philosophy, a belief, a worldview.
