...a high-profile, highly academic, athiest writes a book (Thomas Nagel, Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False) pointing-out that the attempt to explain human consciousness purely according to darwinian evolution and natural processes flies in the face of common sense (click here for an in depth review). What makes this all the more striking is that Nagel is still an athiest! Even though he can't (or won't?) bring himself to believe in God, he has to acknoweldge the absurdity of trying to explain everything in this remarkable universe in a purely natural way.
In the Times Literary Supplement he also recently described Signature in the Cell (a recent book arguing that the complexity of life points to an intelligent designer) as one of his best books of the year (even though he doesn't draw the same conclusions as the writer, Stephen Mayer). The key point is this: even those who don't want to accept the existence of God are beginning to acknoweldge that this funny old life of ours can't be explained naturally.
More posts on the coming demise of Scientific Naturalism (not science itself, thankfully!) to follow.
